There are a lot of Personal Assessments available. Very few are simple and to the point. Zig Ziglars “wheel of life” is one we’ve found to be very beneficial. We based this one on many of his ideas. Download it, and find out what your wheel looks like.

People are always looking for more balance. Balance is only an arbitrary thought until effort has been put behind its meaning. This personal assessment template can help.

Personal Assessment Template

This personal assessment template is based on Zig Ziglar’s Wheel of Life. The premise with the wheel of life is simple. People have multiple areas of their lives which he refers to as spokes. Think of family as a spoke, or physical as a spoke. With each of these spokes, you can evaluate yourself. How well are you doing within the area of family?

After you’ve rated yourself in each of the core areas, these are plotted on a wheel. How does your wheel look? Is it lumpy, giving you a bumpy ride in life? Do you have a large wheel, so you can really pickup speed?

This type of assessment just makes sense.

The personal assessment template here does not mirror Zig’s Wheel of Life exactly. Zig has different spokes on his wheel, and you rate yourself from 1 – 10. We put the same number of spokes but the rating is from 1 – 5.

As Zig points out in his Born to Win Workbook, everyone’s wheel will look different. What does your wheel look like?

A few things to keep in mind

I wanted this personal assessment to be customizable. That’s why not all of the spokes that I included mirror Zig’s Wheel of Life. They didn’t work for me in how I evaluate my balance. Also, maybe you want fewer or more spokes. You can simply add items or delete lines, and the chart will automatically update.

Here’s the areas being used in this personal assessment vs. the wheel of life:

Pick items that make sense for you, when you think about the elements of your life.  The specific number or terms used doesn’t really matter.  What matters is that you’re thinking about your life holistically, and not just focusing on one or two areas.

When you identify areas that need more attention and focus, what are you going to do about it?  How much attention and focus does it need to move it up to where it needs to be?

What will happen to other areas of your life if you divert attention?

My Experience

These are all interesting questions to work through as you try and balance your life.  I’ve noticed that in my own life when I’m more balanced, I ultimately get more done.  This seems a little counter-intuitive at first, but I think this outcome is logical.

When I’m not balanced, I get worn down.  I feel frustrated or overwhelmed.  That’s when I can put more time into something and not really get anything done.  Contrast to when my life is more diversified.  I feel fresh.  My energy levels are higher.  Plus, I know that my time is limited.  This limitation forces me to focus on items that are more important.

Hopefully, this personal assessment can help you in your path of finding balance.  I’ve also included some additional links to some of our other personal improvement templates.
